The site of the Green Street Bunker was a property owned and occupied by Minnie Louisa Sheppard. Minnie was great grandmother to my wife Clare Slattery [nee Geaney]. The property was confiscated by the Commonwealth Government under the provisions of wartime acquisition. She was required to vacate within two weeks and to disassemble and remove the building. Minnie never recovered from the loss of her paradise by the hill and passed away in 1944, a dispirited lady. Post war the property was not returned to her family and she received no financial compensation. Minnie was a lady of remarkable courage. She left her native home in Wallsall Staffordshire at age 19 and sailed to Townsville where she met William Jenkins, married and raised five children at the green street home.
