B61-7 Nuclear Bomb av rocbolt

Bradbury Science Museum B61 MOD 7 The B61 is a versatile strategic and tactical weapon that can be carried on some fighter jets, the B-52H Stratofortress, and the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. This warhead can be dropped at high speeds from altitudes as low as 50 feet. The weapon can be dropped free-fall or deployed with a parachute and can be detonated in the air or on the ground. Los Alamos designed and engineered the B61 warhead in 1963. Most B61s were produced in the 1970s, and production ended by about 1989. Over the years, the B61 has undergone many modifications (MODS) to meet changing military requirements (MODS 1-12). The B61 is the oldest type of nuclear weapon in the stockpile. The B61 is undergoing a life-extension program (LEP) at Los Alamos, in partnership with other nuclear weapons laboratories, to convert four earlier versions of the B61 into a single modification: the B61-12. The LEP will increase the weapon's safety, security, and reliability and help to ensure that the B61 remains in the stockpile for years to come. The LEP will also add a tail kit that will significantly improve the B61's accuracy
