Mission San Diego was the site of a large Native revolt in 1775. A series of accumulated resentment over flogging and other punishments, added to the moving of the mission to be closer to Native settlements, likely precipitated the attack. On November 4, 1775, two Kumeyaay converts, Francisco and his brother Carlos fled the mission and formed an alliance with at least fifteen villages. That night, some 600-800 Natives plundered the chapel and set several buildings aflame. Father Luís Jayme, head of Mission San Diego, attempted to stop the attack and was brutally beaten to death at where the cross is on the left, the first Christian martyr of California. The natives then fled into the hills. San Diego's chapel was destroyed by by the fire, and all early records were lost. Mission Valley, San Diego, California
