New York City USA - American Museum of Natural History - Milstein Hall of Advanced Mammals - Mammut av Daniel Mennerich

The American mastodon (Mammut americanum), seen in the front, is an extinct North American proboscidean that lived from about 3.7 million years ago until about 10,000 BC. It was the last surviving member of the mastodon family. Fossil finds range from present-day Alaska and New England in the north, to Florida, southern California, and as far south as Honduras and El Salvador. Its main habitat was cold spruce woodlands, and it is believed to have browsed in herds. The Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was a descendent of Mammuthus meridionalis,[2] and is an extinct species of elephant of the Quaternary period that appeared in North America (in the present United States and to as far south as Nicaragua and Honduras) during the late Pleistocene. It is believed by some authorities[1] to be the same species as its slightly larger cousin, M. imperator, because of their similarities in fossil location and size. The Columbian mammoth, left side, was one of the last members of the American megafauna to go extinct, with the date of disappearance generally set at approximately 12,500 years ago. However, several specimens have been dated to 9,000 years ago or less, and one near Nashville, Tennessee, was reliably dated to only about 7,800 years ago. According to some research there is evidence of the interbreeding between the Columbian Mammoth and the woolly mammoth. Gomphotherium "Welded Beast" is an extinct genus of proboscid which evolved in the Early Miocene of North America from 13.650—3.6 Ma, living about 10 million years. The genus emigrated into Asia, Europe and Africa after a drop in sea level (probably during the Tortonian epoch) allowed them to cross over. It survived into the Pliocene, and its remains have been found in Chile, France, Germany, Austria, Kansas, Tennessee, Pakistan, Kenya and Bosnia and Herzegovina
